Hello and welcome to The UK Investor, a newsletter focused on joining the dots between markets, economics and politics in the UK, for those on the outside looking in, and the inside looking out.
Who I am
I’m a recently departed UK civil servant, having worked in HM Treasury on business policy and analysis, including leading on support for strategically important firms during Covid and heading up a UK corporate sector research group. Before joining HM Treasury in 2019 I spent over a decade in finance, starting my career in infrastructure finance, before working in equity product strategy for a large global asset manager. I’m a CFA charterholder, have an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Oxford University. That doesn’t make me particularly qualified, it just hopefully shows I know a little (but not a lot) about some of the things I talk about.
What I plan to do
I’ve always been fascinated by the intersection of private markets and public policy, and the links between companies, industries, and countries. My work and personal life has taken me across the Atlantic and back again, twice. I’m now relocating to the US for family reasons and have set up The UK Investor to keep my brain sharp, to test my ideas, and to share some knowledge as I work out my next move.
I’m also trying to play a small role in addressing what I feel is a dearth of informative yet engaging content for those investing in the UK. This newsletter isn’t just about picking stocks or whether to buy gilts however, although I plan to turn to that in time.
For now, I’m going to write about the wider economic and political context, and trends across UK markets, industries, and firms. I hope by doing this to tell a broader story about the UK economy, to highlight areas of opportunity, and to play just a tiny role in encouraging investment and growth in the UK.
I will range widely and I don’t claim to be an expert on any one topic.
Please do get in touch with any thoughts, feedback and corrections.
Brilliant to see this Substack, love it already!
